Rozhen monasteryIt is located 4.5 km northeast of Melnik in the southwest slopes of Mount Pirin. There is evidence that the monastery had existed in the 9th-12th centuries. A busy literary centre, it was famous for its 14th century calligraphic school. One of its works of exclusive artistic value was the filigree “Interpretation of Job”, decorated by 117 azure miniatures. Unfortunately, it was taken to Jerusalem in 1847. What draws the interest in the Rozhen Monastery is the main Church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin from 1600, renovated and covered by mural paintings in 1732; the unique wood carvings of the iconostasis (17th-18th century), the work of wood carvers from Debur; the five original pieces of stained glass from 1715; the monastery ossuary from 1662; the residential wing with exquisite roofed balconies and staircases, as well as the belfry.
