ObzorThe town of Obzor has a scenic location in the easternmost foothills of the Balkan Range in a large bay of the Black Sea. It is 60 km south of Varna and 74 km northeast of Bourgas. The town is an attractive resort, combining the wide sea and a convenient beach with the mountain. Its incredible location gave birth to its ancient name Heliopolis (Town of the Sun). Founded by Hellenic seafarers, it was later also a famous Roman fortress. During the Middle Ages it was called Kozyak, after the name of Kozyak, the strong Bulgarian fortress, the port of which had major importance for the development of the Bulgarian commerce along the Black Sea in the 13th-14th centuries. Remains of the medieval fortress are discernible about 3 km west of the town. Nos [Cape] Emine (Emona) is the easternmost point of the Balkan Range. It is south of Obzor. The steep rocky cape, 60 m high, is jutting into the sea, while its foundation is spotted with underwater rocks. There is a lighthouse, during the construction of which remains of a medieval fortress and a church came to light.
