Kazanluk thracian tombIt is located on Tyulbeto Hill in the environs of the town of Kazanluk. Since 1979 it has been in the List of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage under UNESCO protection. The tomb consists of an ante-chamber, a corridor (1.95 m long, 1.12 m wide and 2.24 m high) and a burial chamber with a hive-like bell-like dome (33.25 m high with a diameter of the foundation of 2.65 m and of the cut top – 0.47 m). The mural paintings in the burial chamber and in the corridor are of exclusive artistic value. The murals in the corridor present scenes of fighting. A meeting between two armies of different tribes is represented on the eastern wall. This can be surmised from the differences in clothing and armaments. On the other wall, two warriors in a single combat stand out in front of the troops. The total number of human figures on the two friezes is 21. Of great interest is the whirlwind chase of chariots, painted in the dome of the burial chamber. The painter had provided an exclusive artistic suggestion, having presented forever the drive of the chariots and the tempestuous run of the horses. The images, showing the Thracian ruler and his wife, exert a particularly strong influence. The couple becomes the natural focus of the ritual act of the funereal feast presented. The regal appearance of the ruler and his gold wreath, a symbol of his divine immortality, and the sadness of his earthly wife, having trustfully put her right hand into his hand, inspire different feelings and are, at the same time, in a compositional unity. Placed right opposite the entrance to the chamber, they are surrounded by relatives and servants, approaching them and carrying fruit and funeral gifts. Besides the amazing artistic skill shown in the composition, in individual images and in the selection of the colours, the ancient artist has also left extremely valuable information, showing particulars of the clothing, armament, lifestyle and customs of the Thracian aristocracy. A special protective structure has been built over the tomb with an air-conditioning installation, guaranteeing the necessary conditions for the preservation of the murals. An exact copy of the tomb has been made nearby, designed for visitors. During the summer, the performance of “Mysteries in the Valley” is shown on a specially built theatre platform near the tomb. It shows ancient rituals, connected with the mourning and the burial of a Thracian ruler, who had been killed in a battle.
