LukovitTown of Lukovit has been a central settlement for centuries dating back 2-3 000 years BC. There are traces of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine and Old Bulgarian periods. With the first decrees after the Unification of Bulgaria (the act of unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and the then-Ottoman province of Eastern Rumelia in the autumn of 1885) Lukovit was proclamed a county center. In 1898 with Kniaz Ferdinand`s Decree N 263 of Dec 3rd the village was proclaimed a town under the name of Lukovit. Municipality of Lukovit is part of Lovech District. Neighboring municipalities are Ugarchin municipality to the east, Cherven bryag and Roman municipalities to the west, Yablanitsa and Teteven municipalities to the north and Dolni Dabnik and Cherven bryag municipalities to the south. The region is situated between the Danubian Plain and the foot of Stara Planina.The terrain is hilly and flat, characteristic for the hilly Danubian plain. Climate on the territory is moderate. Administrative centre of Lukovit Municipality is town of Lukovit. It is an hour away by car from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Main road E-83 Sofia – Pleven - Ruse passes through the town.
